Class 1 Melt Program

October 18, 2021, the Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure and ICBC introduced the mandator entry-level training (MELT) for new class 1 commercial driver applicants.  MELT is the prerequisite for anyone wishing to obtain a B.C. class one commercial licence.  The goal of this training is to make BC’s roads and highways safer for everyone across Canada.

The BC MELT program is designed to exceed the National Safety Code Standard to ensure the safety of everyone on Canadian roads.  The program is designed to build education, confidence and professionalism within the commercial driving industry. The curriculum focuses on education around various Canadian jurisdictions, safe operational practices, understanding diverse driving conditions in order to prepare students to enter into the profession of commercial driving.

The British Columbia MELT program is a minimum of 140 hours of in-class, in-cab, in-yard and on-road driving.  Within the program students will gain knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • Air Brake Endorsement
  • Detailed pre-trip inspection training
  • Various backing techniques
  • Coupling and uncoupling the trailer
  • Urban driving skills
  • Mountain driving skills
  • Professional driving techniques and skills
  • Fuel efficiency knowledge
  • Cargo securement
  • Chain-up skills
